Longer-term responses may include erratic feelings, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms such as headaches or nausea.

Some persons who have experienced a surprising, unpleasant, or dangerous event develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Feeling scared during and after a terrifying experience is normal. The human body goes through a cascade of instantaneous changes in response to fear, all of which better protect us from or enable us to flee danger.
